Jefferson County is home to 22 county owned parks and several trails, spread-out through the County’s 373,000 acres, for the public to enjoy as our Parks Department strives to preserve natural resources for public use and conservation. The Parks department operates and maintains a parks system with resource-oriented recreation, trails, and special use parks. They also expand the parks system for environmental and land use benefits, as well as, for the health and enjoyment of Jefferson County residents and others. 

In order to maintain high quality parks and offer an excellent on-the-job learning experience in natural resources maintenance, the department is looking to hire a Natural Resources Intern. This position will run approximately from mid-May through late August, depending on the intern’s school schedule and will include the following tasks:

  • Monitor and manage native plant communities throughout the parks system including the treatment/removal of invasive species.
  • Mix, spray and spread fertilizers, herbicides, and/or insecticides.
  • Operate and maintain various vehicles and equipment such as trucks and trailers, skid loaders, tractors, mowers, chainsaws, woodchippers, and herbicide sprayers.
  • Assist with forestry operations such as planting, pruning, and removal of trees and shrubs.
  • Complete general service on equipment including sharpening, greasing, oil changes, and general repairs and replacements
  • Assist with the coordination of public volunteer projects, such as trail builds, river clean-ups and trash collection.
Qualifications:

Starting Wage of $15/hour

with the opportunity for 40+ hours/week

Qualifications we are looking for:

    • Currently pursuing a 2 or 4-year degree in a natural resource focused academic program such as environmental sciences, forestry, ecological restoration, biology, etc.
    • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent with some building and grounds maintenance experience including driving, trucks, trailers, and operating equipment.
    • Have or willing to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification within 30 days of the start of employment.
    • Must have a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
    • One to two years related experience and/or training, preferred
